Lago Maggiore is, to the north, 1/3 in Switzerland and 2/3 in Italy. The east side is Lombardia, the west Piemont. Porto Valtravaglia is on the east side, 8km south of the better known Luino.
Casa Alfredo can be reached by public transport. The Swiss SBB runs from Zurich to Portovaltravaglia in 3 – 4 hours, according to connections. www.sbb.ch . From the train station it is a 10 min walk to the house. In summer regular boats also stop in Porto Valtravaglia.
By car from Zurich over the Gotthard tunnel or pass, Belinzona, Luino. Either along the lake, or over Ponte Tresa. (230 km, 3 hours)
Coming from Geneva, either through the Mont Blanc Tunnel, Novara, Sesto-Calende (fastest, 340 km, 4 hours) or via the Simplon tunnel (car load on train) or pass, then ferryboat in Intra to Laveno. (longer but more picturesque).
The nearest airport is Milano-Malpensa. From there the direct trains to Porto Valtravaglia or rental car. (50km 1:15 hour)
